So arguably one of, if not my favorite Proverb is Proverb 8. King Solomon the man that is considered to be the wisest man ever. As a reference to that claim see 1 Kings 4:29-31 because it states that.
If any of you know the story of Solomon he has some very good wisdom. Wisdom that has and will hold the test of time also he had his vices which as a human I look at some of his words and say the old saying “The pot calling the kettle black” if you don’t know what I mean by that I encourage you to read about Solomon and than listen to some of his Proverbs you will see what I mean.
So let’s talk about Proverb 8. To simplify it in my own terms it’s kind of an old Hebrew Poem about wisdom and how we need to seek wisdom and that who seeks he will obtain favor from the Lord.
Proverbs 8:12-36 “Lady Wisdom” starts to describe what wisdom is. When reading this you need to think of how you would describe Jesus and look at the similarities. It is amazing the resemblance.
I was listening to this in my car and if you read the Bible you know your brain starts to wonder sometimes. Mine was during this but then I heard the description something happened to me and all of a sudden I was being pulled in. I had to restart the Proverb and listen closely.
It was like I stumbled onto something for the first time. It was the first time I felt I can connect something in Scripture with something else. I was astonished with what I heard and what I felt after hearing it.
This is a long Proverb but I want to break a few key verses down to show you what I mean.
Proverbs 8:13 “The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.” Connects to Mathew 15:11 Jesus says; “it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.””
Proverbs 8:17 “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.” Connects with both John 14:21 “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” and Mathew 7:7-8 Jesus says; “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
Proverbs 8:19 “My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver.” Connects to John 15:1-2 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”
Proverbs 8:20-21 “I walk in the way of righteousness, in the paths of justice, granting an inheritance to those who love me, and filling their treasuries.” Connects to Mathew 19:21 Jesus said to the rich man “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Proverbs 8:23-30 “Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always,”. Is summarized perfectly in John 17:5 “And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.” Also John 8:59 Jesus states “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
I’m sure I can research more of this and connect it to Jesus speaking but maybe with the little tease of this it may cause a stir in your heart to read it for yourself and see if you can make your own connections.
